Perry was born to actors Laurie Metcalf, and Jeff Perry. Her first television performances were Jackie Harris on ABC's sitcom Roseanne. Her mother played the character. However, her parents did not let her perform until she turned an adult because of the impact stress might have on their daughter. Perry admitted that she wasn't comfortable acting in high school, but started performing as a means to connect with new people during her time at Northwestern University after switching from Boston University.
